Answers
to the TeVISTA range of solutions
How
can the TeVISTA range help me identify problems?
Put simply, the TeVISTA range will AUTOMATICALLY and INSTANTLY diagnose
network problems wherever they exist on your network! Combining unique
software agent technology with sophisticated Expert Problem Finding and
analysis technology , the TeVISTA range uses the agent to capture
network packets at the source of the problem. It then decodes the
protocol information and automatically analyses the information for
symptoms of problems, suggesting possible causes and resolutions in
plain English.

Identifying
problems is one thing, can it help me fix them?
A vast reservoir of experience in network troubleshooting and design has
been condensed together to create the Expert Analysis system of the
TeVISTA range. When a suspected network problem is identified by the
automated system, not only are details given of the problem and its
possible causes, but also the most appropriate steps to take in order to
solve the problem. In this way, the TeVISTA range helps the less
experienced engineer solve problems, in addition to a reassuring 'second
opinion' for the more experienced troubleshooter.

My
network is switched to the desktop throughout so even Distributed
Sniffer couldn't troubleshoot everywhere - is the TeVISTA range any
better?
The TeVISTA range takes a
smarter approach to distributing its reach around a network and is
therefore superior to those products that are wholly 'probe' based.
First of all, the technology is 100% software based and was designed
from first principles to be run on non-dedicated workstations and
servers - in fact 0.5MB RAM is all that is used and a 486 CPU is more
than enough power. Secondly, the licensing approach is totally different
to other vendors. We want you to have broad coverage, so we supply
dozens, hundreds or even thousands of agents, for a fraction of the cost
of distributing other analyzers. The vision we have is of 'expert
analysis at source' - every desktop and every server covered by an
agent, so that when a problem occurs, you can connect to the devices
affected and run an Expert Analysis, remotely, from anywhere in the
world! You can still deploy the TeVISTA range Agents as dedicated probes
for monitoring routers or mainframes, but the beauty is you can deploy
agents directly onto devices too!

If
I have a problem on another site, or I'm away from the office, how will
I know?
The TeVISTA range provides
over 100 real-time conditions tracked by the alarm system which can
alert you directly from the management console or by email or text
message. Alarms can be triggered by a device not responding to a poll,
or by error or usage thresholds being breached on a particular device or
port. More advanced alarms are supported by the agents which can deal
with more exacting traffic characteristics, such as broadcast or
multicast levels, specific errors and traffic patterns. You can also set
3 conditions, suspect, problem and resolved to give you finer control
over whether a problem should be considered minor, major or severe. The
TeVISTA range unique historic playback allows hours of network activity
to be stored and accessed retrospectively - you can 'rewind the tape' to
the time when the problem occurred and then look at exactly who was
doing what on the network at that time in order to diagnose the problem.

How
does Performance monitor over my WAN Links from one location?
Using Chevin's unique HSRmon technology which minimises bandwidth
impact, combined with software agents to act as probes deployed
throughout your network to collect information on all traffic, you can
monitor the entire network from one location in real time without the
need to send a hardware probe to any location. You can if you wish even
view your network from anywhere simply by having your laptop as your
management console

I
need to know whether my WAN bandwidth is being wasted - what is the the
TeVISTA range solution to this?
Using a combination of SNMP Reporter and an agent deployed as a Probe on
the router port, we give a real-time and long-term report on how
bandwidth is being used, along with errors, discards etc from the router
itself. Importantly, the agent allows us to expand on this information
by showing who were the busiest users and what they were doing. Chevin
believe that without both reports, you cannot truly understand, and
therefore control, your network usage. Without control, you may be
spending on unnecessary bandwidth or even worse - heading for usage
problems.

Some
analysers support over 400 protocol decodes - how many can the TeVISTA
range give me?
In fact over 1000 protocols and sub-protocols are supported by the
TeVISTA range. However, TCP/IP is by far the most commonly used protocol
and it is rare these days for anyone to have more than twenty protocols
on their network - and when you factor in the subsets of these, there
should be no need for more than, say, 60 decodes. Even with the
introduction of new IP-based ones such as VoIP, MPLS, HSRP, you will
have more than you need with the TeVISTA range.

What
happens when I want to expand or change the network, or add voice to it?
If you want to avoid overspending or building in problems to your
network you need hard facts. The TeVISTA range helps by providing some
proper sizing information and intelligence regarding traffic flows
within the network. Reports are automated and therefore simple to use.
When a new application for the network, such as voice, is considered,
the TeVISTA range is the ideal means to measure the impact of new
traffic and Expert Analysis for VoIP pinpoints how the network needs to
be improved if problems are foreseen.

Do
I need a dedicated machine or hardware to run the TeVISTA range?
In a word - No! Not for the management console and most importantly, not
for the Visibility Agent software either. This can save significantly
when compared to other distributed analyzers that rely either on
custom-hardware probes or dedicated PCs to act as probes, not to mention
the saving by not having to use SPAN/mirror ports on switches!

The
TeVISTA range seems more expensive than other Distributed Analysers,is
there a reason for this?
Most people tell us how inexpensive the TeVISTA range is compared to
other products they look at! However, there are differences in how we
package the product that occasionally make it appear to offer lesser
value for money. First, the TeVISTA range includes the full protocol
decode pack, the full Expert Analysis module, Report Generator and SNMP
Reporter. Secondly, we provide twenty five Visibility Agents, which do
NOT require DEDICATED hardware - you can literally put them onto a
workstation or server directly. This saves the hidden cost of 'probe'
hardware and mirror ports on switches that other systems will need.
Finally, when your network expands, bundles of further agents are priced
so that each agent only costs as little as $20 each!

Will
my staff and I need a lot of training to learn how to use the TeVISTA
range?
The product is simple to deploy and its intuitive design means you will
get immediate results. The Expert System is designed to take the skill
and legwork out of network troubleshooting, giving you an automated
Network Consultant in a Box at your disposal. This means that more
experienced staff can be freed up to concentrate on more skilled tasks.
